8th Annual Cariboo Highland Games, June 01/02, 2007

2007-05-07

To all participants in the 8th Annual Braveheart Challenge:

Welcome to our 8th Annual Cariboo Highland Games taking place on June 1st and 2nd, 2007. The Braveheart Challenge is the Cariboo’s version of the traditional Highland Games heavyweight events, without requiring super human strength! Instead, your brain will be challenged with the Celtic trivia contest, your taste buds tested with the Scotch tasting competition and your “athletic” ability with the haggis hurl, caber toss and the William Wallace relay among other events.

The Braveheart Challenge is one of several events that will be part of our Games. Other activities at Lebourdais Park will include Highland Dance competitions, piping and drumming demonstrations, and vendors with food and Celtic items for sale.

For a special treat, join us on Saturday evening, June 2nd, for a traditional Ceilidh (a Scottish party) for those not speaking Gaelic!.

Most of all, I hope you enjoy your time at our Games.

Below is an outline of the events planned for June 1st and 2nd, 2007.  To access and download entry forms please click on "Downloads" on the sidebar.

Braveheart ‘Light’ field Event Guidelines

a.) Caber Toss

“The competitor lifts and balances the caber, heavy end up, and tosses it so that the small end passes through the vertical position and falls away from the competitor. (The caber must turn end over end.) Measure the angle formed on a clock from the line made running to toss the caber. E.g. a perfect toss is parallel to the line run, at 12:00 o’clock. Acceptable ‘time’ ranges from 9:00 to 3:00 o’clock. Points are awarded for distance tossed and ‘clock time’.”

b.) Sheaf Toss

Each competitor will make one attempt at each height until the thrown sheaf does not clear the bar, between the uprights.
“The sheaf is a burlap or plastic bag filled with a suitable material such as straw, mulch, or rope. The sheaf is thrown over a crossbar, with a pitchfork. The total weight of the bag shall be 20 lbs. for males and 12 lbs. for females. The toss shall be made in any manner desired using a pitchfork with at least two tines.”

c.) Frying Pan Toss

“The competitor holds a frying pan with both hands and throws it forward, from between the legs.” Extra points for a ‘stick’ in the grass!

d.) Eggs on Spoons Run

One Participant carries two eggs on two spoons, above her/his head, never touching the eggs, as she/he runs the Cock Horse Route. No points are earned if an egg falls from a spoon.

e.) Pick-up Truck Pull

“Each team will attempt to pull a pickup truck a designated distance. The time it takes the front wheels to travel the distance will be recorded”.

f.) Haggis Hurl

Three team members will attempt to hit a blindfolded piper with a haggis laden water balloon, fired from a water balloon sling shot from a distance of 100 ft.! Two members of the team will each hold a side of the water balloon launcher, while the third aims and fires the haggis water balloon at the piper. Two tries per team, after a practice hurl.

g.) Life Chain Run

The entire team runs the Cock Horse Route together, holding hands at all times. No points are scored if the lifeline chain breaks.
